The press conference on the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Institution of Protectors of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, CEMI and Juventas was held on 28 February 2012 at 11 am in the PR Center.

The speakers at the press were:

Vlado Dedović - Legal Program Coordinator, CEMI.

The cooperation covered by this Memorandum refers to improving the quality of service for LGBT people and documenting cases of violations of human rights of drug users in the judicial system of Montenegro. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding will strengthen and improve the cooperation that the Institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro had with these two non-governmental organizations.

The project Improving the quality of services for LGBT people is implemented by Juventas with the support of the British Embassy in Podgorica with the main goal of promoting and protecting the human rights of LGBT people in Montenegro. In the framework of the project, among other things, handbooks for working with LGBT people will be created, trainings organized for employees of the Institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, judges, prosecutors, police officers and medical workers, for LGBT activists and an anti-discrimination campaign focused on service providers. Marijana Laković, Deputy Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, developed the manuals for police officers, those holding high judicial positions, employees of the Institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, as well as other lawyers practitioners.

The project Documenting Cases of the Violation of Human Rights of Drug Users in the Judiciary System of Montenegro is implemented by the non-governmental organization Juventas in partnership with the NGO CEMI, with the financial support of the Open Society Institute in Budapest. The main goal of this project is to contribute to the reduction of the level of human rights violations in Montenegro, by identifying and documenting cases of violations of human rights of drug users in front of the judicial authorities of Montenegro.

The final product of this project will be a comprehensive report with concrete conclusions and recommendations for improving the existing situation regarding respect of the human rights of drug users in front of the judicial authorities in Montenegro.
